Strategic ribbing on sleeves or socks alters how air flows over these shapes, making them more aerodynamically efficient especially at high speeds. When air flows over a surface (like your skin), it forms a boundary layer and a thin layer of air that sticks close to the surface. On smooth surfaces, this layer can separate too early, causing drag. A ribbed fabric disrupts this layer just enough to keep the flow attached longer.
